a long long time...

Oh, me... Oh, my... it's been a long, long time.

If I were to tell you my life has been a roller coaster ride for the past 7 weeks - I would hope to hear you say, "Where does the roller coaster line begin?!" I have been experiencing a lot of life changes and finding that 24 hours might be the perfect number of hours in the day for the earth to rotate, but not enough for me. Between Dixie, family, work, Dixie Goods Company and plain life - I just cannot find enough hours in the day.
Here is the picture summary of the past few weeks!

Wore a GREAT Chevron Sequined dress to a life-long friends' wedding!

Dixie swam at Lake Grapevine at the Golden Retriever Rescue of North Texas Annual Picnic!

Lots of play time with Champ - Dixie's Bestie!

Dixie and her cousins - the J. Lohr Wine Dog Gang!

F. is for Frank made these amazing tags for my collars - Awesome!

Completed the ONE-OF-A-KIND Carseat Cover for a great friend!

Happy Tuesday!!

Meet and Sniff Monday // Meet Dixie Goods Company

Just over two years ago, I came to the conclusion I needed a dog in my life. When my mother asked me what kind of dog, I was quick to say a dog breed that someone else in my life wanted, not me. When my mother asked me a second time, I answered, "A Golden Retriever." I was blessed to grow up with a Golden Retriever, Bentley. Bentley slept at my crib side and often woke my parents up when I was trying to escape my crib, a nightly occurrence.

After making the decision to get a Golden Retriever, I immediately went looking at all the shelters and rescue groups for a Golden. After long searches and countless applications, I gave up on adopting and took my search to the breeders. I tried my best to adopt a Golden Retriever, but I was not the ideal candidate living in an apartment. Once I figured out my way around the breeders in the area it was all a matter of  finding a female dog that was expecting a litter and getting onto a wait list, after paying a deposit, to see if you'll get the chance to pick the #3 female or #2 male, etc. etc. Well, I could not find any Golden Retriever puppies in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas or Louisiana.

I quickly called my parents, who live in Georgia, and asked if they'd be willing to pick up a puppy for me in their area if I could find one, my father said yes without consulting my mother. (My dad LOVES dogs!!) I started the search in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee. I about gave up the search... thinking I should wait until after school gets out and maybe I'll be able to find a puppy in the summer.

When a final search lead me to the breeder out of South Carolina. This wasn't just anywhere in South Carolina... this was on the way to a favorite family spot we frequent as a family. We passed this city numerous times without any real notice. They had phone numbers listed (odd in the breeder world... everyone seemed to prefer emails) and so I called. A wonderful woman answered the phone and said they did have one female left but I would have to speak with her husband. I called/he called back and we agreed he would send pictures of the one female left from the litter. A few days later (it seemed like a month) I got an email from the breeder with two gorgeous pictures of a puppy, she was mine! The second I opened the email I was quick to notice 2 email addresses in the "To:" line. I called him immediately, no one was getting my Dixie!! I asked all the questions to ask a breeder and then said I want her and when can I pick her up?! Twenty long days later, Dixie made the long journey to Texas - like a champ!

That summer, Dixie and I travelled back to the southeast for vacation when we stumbled upon a store with fun upholstery fabric for a great price! My mom was quick to suggest we sew a new dog bed for Dixie with her sewing machine. Well, while we were in the southeast we never finished the dog bed, so the sewing machine came back to Texas with us in order to finish the project. Well, when that project was complete - the sewing machine stayed and Dixie Goods Company was started. The journey from the first dog bed to the most recent collars has been a long and fun one - I have learned more about collars than I would have ever expected. The logo with the picture of puppy Dixie is monumental for me because she's the reason why I am starting this business. I'm a proud dog owner and I am now creating wonderful, stylish collars for all dogs!

This coming weekend, September 15th - I'll be selling my dog collars and hopefully dog duvets as well, at the Dallas Flea. Also, I will be selling my collars and dog duvets on my Etsy site, which is still under construction. I do have the Turkey Lurkey collar up for sale currently on Etsy

I will be posting more about Dixie Goods Company and the Dallas Flea throughout this week and next week!

Thank you for all your support over the past year with this blog - this will continue to be my creative outlet for all my wonderful readers!

Happy Dixie Goods Company!

Dog Products // Part Two

There are a lot of options when it comes to training you puppy. I chose crate training when it came to Dixie being home during the day while I was at work. The crate quickly became a safe refuge for her to eat her treats and play with her most favorite toys. After reading reviews after reviews I ended up with a wire crate, found by my mother for $17! You read that right... the awesome shopper my mom is found a super large crate with dividers for only $17! Of course it was a used crate, but excellent condition. The picture below is the exact one we own. I love that the crate has two doors; it allows for easy set up in our home.

Dixie is a nut for traveling and after LUGGING the wire crate in and out of the car I knew I had to make another investment. After some more researching I ended up with the Orvis Nylon Travel Crate. I have to make an important statement when it comes to buying this crate. I do not recommend this crate for puppies or any dog who tries to escape a metal or plastic crate. Dixie started in this crate when she was 1 1/2 years old. She was already crate trained and never tried escaping or pawing at the nylon walls. This crate is our travel only crate and we do not use this for everyday. This travel crate has held up well and I would definitely recommend this crate for the traveling dog!

Dog Products // Part One

Pictures Featured Above
Left - 8 Week Old Dixie - Right - 1 1/2 Year Old Dixie

My great neighbors are just days away from being new puppy parents! This past weekend, I got to join them for a little shopping spree for the puppy! Personally... I am most looking forward to Dixie having a another best friend!! I went over all the hints and personal experiences with all of the puppy purchases I made in the past 2 1/2 years.

This week, I want to go over a few purchases I've made over the years. I am going to do some comparison to all different brands I have purchased. Enjoy!

Today, I want to talk about what no one wants to talk about... Waste Dispensers! There are a lot of options out there for you to try. I want to go ahead and lead you to the 5 paw winner - Bags on Board Waster Dispenser. (Picture at the Bottom)

Petco - Via - $6.99
2 Paws
Pro - Price, under $7
Con - The top fell off nearly immediately and was never able to fit back onto the container securely.

Arm & Hammer - Via - $7.99
3 Paws
Pro- Style... available in many fun colors.
Stays on the leash well with the the hard plastic hook.
Con - Only holds Arm & Hammer bags ($$).
When the top falls off and the bags roll out; it makes for one long mess.

Top Paw - Via - $7.99
3 Paws
Pro - Zipper closure, stays shut, holds any waste bag, can hold a single key as well.
Con - The Velcro latch ended up breaking away from the holder, lost the holder on a walk.

Bags on Board - Via - $7.99
5 Paws
Pro - Hard plastic, Screw-tight closure, Holds a variety of bags
Cons - Bulky.

The most important item that goes along with these dispensers are the bags themselves. While I might be able to find a great deal online... in person I get the BEST price at Home Goods! I can usually always get 320 bags for $9.99 - comparison to 315 bags for $24.99 at Petco

Bottomline:
Home Goods - 3 cents per bag
Petco - 8 cents per bag

29 List // Being Spontaneous

Last night, I had the company of spending a fun evening with new friends up top an Uptown high-rise... however with high winds we took the party downstairs to the lower courtyard - but that did not stop the party. I have come to find that we find friends everywhere we go and I am lucky enough to have a reason to get out of the house, Dixie. At the dog park, I was invited to a dinner and well... with a local chef preparing the meal for the groupwho could say no?!

With this post I want to encourage everyone to go outside their comfort zone and meet someone new... you never know when that person will be inviting you a great dinner! I look forward to being spontaneous more in the future!

Happy Spontaneity!

This will be a weekly post, so get your dogs bathed, groomed, collar on and ready to answer the hard hitting questions only a Monday can bring! Dixie was excited to volunteer to be the first Meet & Sniff Dog of the Week.

The Park

We are lucky enough to be close to a park in order to allow Dixie to run and play with her friends! Tonight after a long walk around the neighborhood we happened to walk by the park.
Side note: We have been working hard on sitting at all intersections and whenever she desires to cross the street. This is important for safety reasons in such a high traffic area.
As we were walking by the park I all of a sudden felt a change in the leash... she was sitting! She was wanting to cross the street to play in the park; although no other dogs were there. Within moments after rewarding her for sitting and going to the park, dogs appeared out of no where! Tonight she got to play with one of her best friends, Liberty, and a new friend, Red. I wanted to share the sitting moment with all my readers - because I am so proud of her!

Happy Walking!

Spring has Sprung

Here in Dallas the sun has permanently taken it's place in the high sky and the wind is now warm - bottom line - it's spring! As a part of my 29 Project, which you will read about soon, I took Dixie on a long walk today. I thought it was fitting to say our gold at the end of our rainbow on this walk was a creek!! Dixie was in the creek in no time and I had my phone out to take pictures of the sweet girl in her element - creeks! I hope you enjoy the weather where ever you are located!

Happy Spring!

Dixie Goods & Light Boxes

My Crafting "To-Do" List:

- Make Light Box

For the past two months I have been wanting to make my very own light box in order to take better pictures of my products. After a short tutorial I gathered all the components and went to town! A short while later I was positioning my lamps and positioning some of my dog collars for pictures. Enter: Dead Camera Battery! Just my luck.. so while my camera battery was charging I used my iPhone for a few pictures. After dinner at Velvet Taco, I returned home to a fully charged battery and the excitement of taking my first official pictures with my light box.

Happy Valentine's Day

I would like to wish all my readers a Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you'll be able to enjoy it with someone/something you love.

The picture above is actually the card I sent out to my friends and family for Valentine's Day. Since I did not get it all together before the winter holidays to send out a card then, I thought why not for Valentine's Day?! I looked online on many of websites (minted.com, snapfish.com, shutterfly.com, finestationary.com) and I could not justified spending nearly $4 a card! So, after finding the perfect font at 1001freefonts.com I created this card in Microsoft Publisher, printed, stuffed, addressed, stamped and sent out. The key to this mini DIY project was patience.

Happy Valentine's Day,

Dog Bed, Chevron Print & Piping

Over the past 21 months we have gone through quite a number of dog beds. I cannot lie when I say I'm thankful to have the ability to sew. With my endless browsing of the internet for fabrics and sewing blogs I continually see the Chevron print and I'm dying to use it somewhere in my apartment. Well, that chance came with the most recent destroying of Dixie's bed. (I do not promote the destroying of dog beds, sometimes it just happens)

When it came down to the design of this new dog bed I knew I wanted the following features:
þ Rectangle shape
þ Zipper closer
þ Piping/Cording around the edges
þ NO STUFFING!

Most of those requests are doable, no problem - but how is a bed supposed to be comfortable?? That's when I came around to the Molly Mutt site and I knew I had to make this for myself.

Here is the adventure of making Dixie's *NEW* Dog Bed:

All the supplies: Approximately 10 T-Shirts, Pins, Rotary Cutter, Scissors, Piping (96 inches),  Cutting Mat & Ruler,  22 inch zipper, Fabric (1 yard, 44 inches wide for outside) (1/2 yard for piping/cording) and Muslin (1 yard, 33 inch wide)

Sewing completed!

My Golden Retriever, Dixie

9 Month Old Dixie

I want to start by sharing the most important dog in my life, Dixie. As days turned into weeks and weeks into months she has taught me many things, the most important thing being patience. Becoming a dog owner is a whole new set of responsibilities that I'm glad to have taken on in my life. Dixie will be a frequent visitor to my posts as she is with me everyday! For my powerful chewer of a dog the best dog toy brands we have encountered are: Nylabone, KONG and the Star Mark Everlasting Fun Ball. While I do not find these toys to be a "steal" they do last a very long time in our household.
